Messrs Shewbrooks and sons of Taunton were asked to build it, however after the building had progressed some little way and before the walls had been quite carried up Messrs Shewbrooks owing to some mistake of the architect in measuring the quantities, he refused to complete it.

The work was consequently retarded and the council was under the necessity of asking for fresh tenders. They did so, but only one tender, that of Messrs Cook and Searle, was received and it was accepted. Mr Cook died soon after and a difficulty arose again which we believe has been satisfactorily adjusted.

A committee of management was formed to assist the architect and although some fault has been found with this committee for their meddling we are bound to say that they have been most indefatigable in their exertions and have upon the whole worked with general success. 

During the 1940s and 1950s it hosted repertory theatre and provided cinema facilities.

The Town Hall is located in the High St of the town and under went a major reburbishment in 2010.

It is licensed to serve alcohol and a bar can either be provided through the Halls Manager or you may arrange your own bar. Please let the Halls Manager know if you require a bar when you make your booking. 

It is used for allsorts of occasions including Flower Shows , Displays , Concerts and Meetings..
